Vahan Portal Transition Causes Vehicle Registration Delays in Telangana

Date:

Hyderabad: The rollout of the national Vahan portal in Telangana has led to significant delays in vehicle registrations, with applicants and dealers reporting waiting periods of up to 20 days for permanent registration numbers.

The issue has created confusion at automobile showrooms, where customers were earlier assured that registrations would be completed at the point of sale. However, due to the transition to the new system, many applications have not progressed as expected.

Officials attribute the delays to a combination of software glitches, operational challenges, and inadequate training during the initial phase of implementation. The Vahan portal, developed by the National Informatics Centre, is being rolled out in stages to digitise and streamline vehicle-related services across the state.

Despite the disruptions, authorities said that some modules are functioning smoothly. Temporary registrations have stabilised, and the fancy number registration system is operational, with hundreds of auctions already conducted. Around 2,200 permanent registration numbers have been issued so far under the new system.

The Transport Department has assured stakeholders that the issues are being addressed with ongoing technical support and that the system is expected to stabilise within two weeks, after which services should run seamlessly.

The transition is part of Telangana’s broader move to integrate with the national Vahan platform, aimed at improving transparency, efficiency, and ease of access to transport services. However, the initial hiccups highlight the challenges involved in shifting to a fully digital system at scale.
